What We Think Shapes Who We Become
In the book of Proverbs, we read a powerful truth:
“For as he thinks in his heart, so is he.” (Proverbs 23:7, NKJV)
This verse reveals a foundational principle—our thoughts shape our identity, our decisions, and ultimately our lives. What we dwell on internally will eventually be seen externally.
The World Recognizes It—But God Established It
Over the years, many books have been written about the power of positive thinking, including works by Norman Vincent Peale. While helpful, these principles find their true foundation in the Word of God.
Scripture doesn’t just promote positive thinking—it calls us to transformed thinking.
Guarding and Directing Our Thoughts
The Apostle Paul gives us clear instruction:
“Finally, brethren, whatever things are true, whatever things are noble, whatever things are just, whatever things are pure, whatever things are lovely, whatever things are of good report… meditate on these things.” (Philippians 4:8, NKJV)
We must be intentional about what we allow to fill our minds.
A Personal Testimony: From Fear to Confidence
I mentioned in a previous devotion when I moved to Cleveland in 1999 as a teenager, I struggled deeply with insecurities, fears, and worries. I was very shy and timid.
But when I came to New Life Bible College, something began to change.
The Holy Spirit started shaping me from the inside out. My mindset began to shift. God was not just changing my circumstances—He was renewing my mind and transforming my heart.
During my first year, I simply soaked everything in—God’s Word, His presence, and the teaching I was receiving.
Then something remarkable happened.
Going into my second year, I was voted vice president of my class. I even had to give a speech to be accepted into that position.
To be honest, when I first arrived, there is no way I could have imagined myself doing something like that.
That transformation didn’t happen overnight—it happened through the renewing of my mind and allowing God to reshape how I thought about myself.
Renewing the Mind Daily
The Bible says:
“Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind…” (Romans 12:2, NKJV)
Every day, we have a choice. We can think according to fear and negativity, or we can align our thoughts with God’s truth.
Taking Every Thought Captive
“Casting down arguments and every high thing that exalts itself against the knowledge of God, bringing every thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ.” (2 Corinthians 10:5, NKJV)
Not every thought belongs—some must be rejected and replaced with truth.
Setting Your Mind on Things Above
“Set your mind on things above, not on things on the earth.” (Colossians 3:2, NKJV)
When we fix our thoughts on Christ, our perspective changes—even if our circumstances don’t immediately.
A Daily Choice
We can dwell on fear or faith.
We can focus on problems or promises.
“You will keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on You, because he trusts in You.” (Isaiah 26:3, NKJV)
Conclusion: Think Like Christ
“Let this mind be in you which was also in Christ Jesus.” (Philippians 2:5, NKJV)
As we align our thoughts with God’s Word, transformation follows.
Call to Action
Take a moment today and ask yourself:
- What am I thinking about consistently?
- Are my thoughts aligned with God’s truth?
- What lies do I need to replace with His Word?
Invite the Holy Spirit to renew your mind daily. As He does, you’ll begin to walk in greater confidence, peace, and purpose—just like He did in my life.
