United as One with Christ—Divided We Fall

“Make every effort to keep the unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace.”

Since my devotion earlier this month on the return of our Lord Jesus Christ, my heart has been drawn to the importance of unity—both in our relationship with Him and within His body.

In Gospel of John chapter 15, Jesus teaches that if we abide in Him, He will abide in us. He makes it clear that our strength, our fruit, and our effectiveness all come from that connection:

“Abide in Me, and I in you… for without Me you can do nothing.” (John 15:4–5)

This is not just a suggestion—it is the foundation of the Christian life. Apart from Him, we are powerless.

The Apostle Paul reinforces this truth in First Epistle to the Corinthians:

“But he who is joined to the Lord is one spirit with Him.” (1 Corinthians 6:17)

What a profound reality—we are not just followers of Christ, but spiritually united with Him.

The Bible often uses marriage as a picture of this relationship. After 18 years of marriage and raising three beautiful children, I’ve come to better understand this analogy. In a healthy marriage, there is intimacy, unity, and fruitfulness. In the same way, when we remain close to Christ—abiding in Him—we begin to bear spiritual fruit.

Scripture describes this fruit in Epistle to the Galatians:

“The fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control…” (Galatians 5:22–23)

This fruit is not something we strive to manufacture—it is the natural result of a life rooted in Christ, shaped by His grace and sustained by His Spirit.

However, the opposite is also true. When we allow division—whether in our hearts or among believers—we disrupt that unity. A divided heart pulls us away from God, and division within the body weakens our witness to the world.

In Gospel of John chapter 17, Jesus prays a powerful prayer—not only for His disciples, but for all who would believe in Him:

“That they all may be one, as You, Father, are in Me, and I in You…” (John 17:21)

Unity matters deeply to the heart of Christ. It reflects His nature and reveals Him to the world.

So today, let us search our hearts. Let us surrender fully to Him and invite Him to examine us:

“Search me, O God, and know my heart…” (Psalm 139:23)

And let us choose transformation over conformity:

“Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind…” (Romans 12:2)

My prayer is that we would walk in unity with Christ and with one another—abiding in Him, bearing fruit, and reflecting His love in all we do.

Blessings to you and your family, in Jesus’ name.
