Laying Aside Every Weight That Hinders Our Walk With God
Scripture: Hebrews 12:1 (NKJV)
“Therefore we also, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which so easily ensnares us, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us,”
Recently, my family and I ran a 5K race. Although we didn’t do a lot of training, we still had to prepare our bodies so we would be ready to finish the race. A 5K is only 3.1 miles, but even that distance requires some preparation and endurance.
As I thought about that experience, I was reminded of Hebrews 12:1, which tells us to lay aside every weight and the sin that so easily ensnares us, and to run with endurance the race set before us.
To understand this on a practical level, imagine trying to run a race while carrying two 45-pound weights hanging at your sides. I would say the likelihood of finishing that race would be pretty low! You would be carrying around a lot of extra weight that would slow you down and make it much harder to reach the finish line.
I believe this gives us a picture of what can happen in our spiritual lives when we allow sin and the cares of this life to weigh us down. They can slow our progress, cause us to become complacent, and even cause us to stumble along the way.
That’s why it’s important that we examine our own hearts and be honest about where we are in our walk with the Lord. Sometimes there are things in our lives that may be hidden from the people around us, but nothing is hidden from Him. He sees it all.
The good news is that God is merciful and gracious. He doesn’t call us to examine our hearts so we can live in condemnation, but so we can come to Him in repentance and receive His forgiveness. First John 1:9 reminds us that if we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
We don’t have to keep carrying the weight of sin. Through repentance and the grace of God, we can lay those things aside and continue running the race He has set before us.
And we’re not running this race alone. We are brothers and sisters in Christ, and we need one another. Just as runners encourage each other to keep going, we should encourage one another in our walk with the Lord. Let’s help each other stay faithful, keep our eyes on Jesus, and finish the race well.
Reflection: Is there anything in your life that has become a weight, slowing you down in your walk with the Lord? Take some time to examine your heart, bring it honestly before Him, and allow His grace to help you move forward.
Prayer: Father, help me to examine my heart and recognize anything that is weighing me down spiritually. Give me the grace to lay aside every sin and distraction that keeps me from walking closely with You. Help me to run with endurance, keep my eyes on Jesus, and encourage my brothers and sisters in Christ to finish the race well. In Jesus’ name, amen.
