You Are Not Who You Used to Be
One of the greatest truths in the Christian life is this:
When you come to Christ, your identity changes.
The Bible says:
“Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new.” (2 Corinthians 5:17, NKJV)
This is not just a nice idea—it is a spiritual reality.
But here’s where many people struggle:
They have been made new—but they are still thinking like their old self.
The Gap Between Identity and Thinking
Even though your spirit has been made new, your mind must be renewed.
This is why some believers still:
- Struggle with insecurity
- Feel stuck in past mistakes
- Live under fear or condemnation
Not because they are still the same—but because they are still thinking the same.
That’s why renewing your mind is so important.
Put On the New Self
The Apostle Paul gives us this instruction:
“Put on the new man which was created according to God, in true righteousness and holiness.” (Ephesians 4:24, NKJV)
And in the book of Colossians:
“Put on the new man who is renewed in knowledge according to the image of Him who created him.” (Colossians 3:10, NKJV)
Notice this—your identity is already given, but you must choose to walk in it.
Renewing Your Identity Through Truth
Walking in your new identity starts with aligning your thoughts with what God says about you.
Here are a few foundational truths:
- You are forgiven (1 John 1:9)
- You are loved (Romans 5:8)
- You are chosen (1 Peter 2:9)
- You are a child of God (John 1:12)
When you begin to think according to these truths, your life begins to reflect them.
Stop Agreeing with Your Past
One of the biggest obstacles to walking in your new identity is continuing to agree with your past.
You may hear thoughts like:
- “That’s just who I am”
- “I’ve always been this way”
- “I’ll never change”
But those thoughts contradict what God says.
Your past may explain where you’ve been—but it does not define who you are.
Let the Mind of Christ Be in You
The Bible says:
“Let this mind be in you which was also in Christ Jesus.” (Philippians 2:5, NKJV)
This means:
- You begin to think differently
- You respond differently
- You see yourself differently
You are no longer limited to your old patterns—you are learning to think like Christ.
Daily Alignment with Your Identity
Walking in your new identity is not automatic—it’s a daily decision.
Each day, you choose:
- Truth over lies
- Faith over fear
- Identity over insecurity
This happens through:
- Time in God’s Word
- Prayer
- Listening to the Holy Spirit
- Rejecting thoughts that don’t align with truth
What This Looks Like Practically
When you walk in your new identity:
- You don’t let fear control you—you stand in truth
- You don’t live in condemnation—you receive God’s grace
- You don’t define yourself by your past—you walk in your future
This doesn’t mean you’re perfect—it means you’re growing.
A Life That Reflects Christ
As your thinking changes, your life begins to reflect Christ more clearly.
Your words change.
Your responses change.
Your confidence grows—not in yourself, but in who God says you are.
Looking Ahead
In the final part of this series, we’ll talk about how to live out a transformed life daily and maintain what God has done in your mind.
Call to Action
Take time today to reflect:
- What have I been believing about myself?
- Does it align with God’s Word?
Choose one truth about your identity in Christ and declare it daily.
Closing Prayer
Lord, thank You that I am a new creation in Christ.
Help me to renew my mind and walk in the identity You have given me.
Teach me to reject every lie and embrace Your truth.
Let my life reflect who You say I am.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.
