Seasons of Discouragement

We all face seasons in life where discouragement settles into our hearts. Sometimes it is only for a few days, while other times it can linger and lead to deep sadness or even depression. If you’ve lived long enough, you’ve probably experienced one of those seasons.

When I think about discouragement, my mind often goes to King David.

Before David became king, he served in the court of King Saul. Most people are familiar with the story—whether from reading the Bible or even watching the recent series about David. Although the show takes some creative liberties, it does a good job of bringing many of the biblical events to life.

Because of Saul’s continued disobedience, God rejected him as king and sent the prophet Samuel to the house of Jesse. While David was faithfully tending his father’s sheep, Samuel anointed him to become the future king of Israel (1 Samuel 16). But David wasn’t crowned king the next day. God’s promise came through a long process of preparation.

During that process, Saul discovered that David had been chosen to replace him. Consumed by jealousy and fear, Saul spent years pursuing David in an attempt to kill him. David lived as a fugitive, hiding in caves and the wilderness. Although he had loyal men who stood beside him and protected him, those years were filled with uncertainty, danger, and discouragement.

When you read the Psalms, you begin to see David’s heart. He was honest with God about his fears, disappointments, and questions. Yet over and over again, he chose to place his hope in the Lord.

One of my favorite verses says:

“Why are you cast down, O my soul? And why are you disquieted within me? Hope in God, for I shall yet praise Him For the help of His countenance.”
‭‭Psalms‬ ‭42‬:‭5‬ ‭NKJV‬‬

I believe David probably had to encourage himself in the Lord every single day, especially while he was being hunted and threatened with death. His circumstances didn’t always change overnight, but his confidence in God remained steadfast.

Most of us will never experience anything like David did, but we all face our own seasons of discouragement. They may come through the loss of a loved one, health struggles, financial hardship, broken relationships, unanswered prayers, or simply feeling overwhelmed by the weight of life.

Personally, I have walked through seasons of discouragement, and they are not enjoyable. They can become times of deep soul-searching—asking questions about your purpose, wondering what God is doing, and sometimes even struggling to pray. Ironically, when discouragement comes, the very thing we often neglect is the thing we need the most: spending time with the Lord.

Instead of pulling away from God, we need to draw near to Him. We need to seek His heart through prayer, open His Word, and allow the Holy Spirit to strengthen our weary souls. If there is anything in our lives that has created distance between us and the Lord, we should humbly repent and receive His grace. God is never reluctant to welcome His children back into His presence.

James reminds us:

“Draw near to God, and He will draw near to you.” — James 4:8 (NKJV)

The apostle Peter also gives us this comforting invitation:

“Casting all your care upon Him, for He cares for you.” — 1 Peter 5:7 (NKJV)

And the prophet Isaiah gives us this wonderful promise:

“But those who wait on the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings like eagles, they shall run and not be weary, they shall walk and not faint.” — Isaiah 40:31 (NKJV)

I know this isn’t the most uplifting devotion I’ve ever written, but I believe it’s an important one. The Christian life isn’t free from difficult seasons. There will be times when we feel discouraged, weary, or overwhelmed. But those seasons do not define us, and they do not last forever.

Take heart today. God sees you. He knows exactly where you are. He understands every burden you’re carrying, every tear you’ve cried, and every prayer you’ve struggled to pray.

His promise still stands:

“For He Himself has said, ‘I will never leave you nor forsake you.'” — Hebrews 13:5 (NKJV)

If you’re in a season of discouragement today, don’t give up. Keep seeking the Lord, even if it’s one simple prayer at a time. Keep opening His Word, even if it’s only a few verses. Keep trusting Him, even when you can’t yet see what He’s doing. The same God who sustained David through the wilderness will sustain you through yours.

“The Lord is near to those who have a broken heart, and saves such as have a contrite spirit.” — Psalm 34:18 (NKJV)

Be encouraged today. Your season is not your destination. God is still writing your story, and He is faithful to complete the good work He has begun in you.

Be blessed, FAMILY! 💞
